Key ingredients and swaps

Labeled photo of ingredients for cottage cheese chocolate mousse, displayed in small bowls on a light pink marble counter.
  • Cottage cheese: This gets blended so don’t worry about the texture. I use 2% but you can use whatever fat percentage you like. Compare labels and choose one with less sodium so your pudding doesn’t taste salty.
  • Maple syrup: You can sub honey, sugar, or any sweetener of choice. For a low sugar mousse, choose liquid stevia or sugar-free syrup.
  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds add fiber and help thicken the pudding. Skip them if needed — just make sure to give your pudding time to chill in the fridge to thicken.

Don’t like the texture of cottage cheese? This recipe blends cottage cheese until it’s completely smooth so you get all the nutritional benefits without that questionable texture.

Helpful tools

Top tips

  1. Scrape the sides: If your blender gets stuck, pause and scrape down the sides or give it a gentle shake to keep things moving.
  2. Too runny? If your cottage cheese is watery, blend in an extra teaspoon of chia seeds to help it thicken. But don’t forget, it will thicken in the fridge too!
  3. Adjust the sweetness: Taste and add more maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter mousse.

Common questions

Can I use greek yogurt instead of cottage cheese?

You can use greek yogurt instead of cottage cheese but the flavor and texture will be considerably different. Still yummy, though! If you use greek yogurt, leave the chia seeds out and simply mix ingredients in a bowl.

Does this taste like cottage cheese?

In my opinion, this tastes like a balanced and lightly sweet pudding or mousse. To make this taste the most like traditional mousse, choose a higher fat cottage cheese and a brand with less sodium.

Can I make this lactose-free?

Make this high protein chocolate mousse lactose-free by using a lactose-free cottage cheese.

Do I have to let it chill in the fridge before eating it?

Nope! But it won’t be as thick of a texture if you eat it right away.

can i replace cocoa powder with other flavors such as matcha powder?

    1. Miranda Galati, MHSc, RD says:

I haven’t tested but I suspect that would work!

This is great but I had to scroll thru a ton of nonsense before getting to the recipe. Why oh why does everyone do this? The picture looks great, a paragraph why it’s good is enough and then give us the recipe with the nutritional info. We’re all looking for great recipes and time savers. Please! Enough with the dissertations.

Hi Martha, I’m so sorry for your frustration! In future, there’s a “jump to recipe” button at the top of the page that will take you right to the recipe card. Have a wonderful evening.

Could you add ice to make this like a smoothie?

    1. Miranda Galati, MHSc, RD says:

Maybe, but I haven’t tested it that way! You’ll probably need to add some milk to thin it out too.

Ps. Shared it with my daughters and they are going to try it too!!!!

this might be life changing. so hard to kick the sweet tooth completely. this will help so much! I made it today and it is delicious— even maybe a little too sweet for me, so i will happily try again with less syrup. YAY

Hello, I love the way you create healthy treats. I’m also a health nut lol.
I use a lot of yogurt in replacement of mayonnaise but I would never think to use cottage cheese.
    Thank you,

  7. Shradz says:

Can I use soaked chia seeds and blend them??

    1. Miranda Galati, MHSc, RD says:

Yes, but I don’t think the texture will turn out quite as nice! The chia seeds soak in the liquid from the cottage cheese as it sits in the fridge, which helps the mousse thicken. I suspect soaking the seeds beforehand will lead to a thinner pudding.

  8. Kamal says:

Can I use something else instead of chia seeds ? Thank you

    1. Miranda Galati, MHSc, RD says:

You can just leave them out! It just won’t be quite as thick 🙂

      1. Colleen says:

Hi, just wondering if your protein macros are correct? I’ve tried substituting no fat vs reduced fat and full fat cottage cheese and still can only get as high as 16 grams of protein….maybe I’m missing something? Thanks!

Made this today and it is really yummy! Definitely fulfills the desire to have something chocolatey without having to feel bad about it. I did have to add some coconut milk to mine because it was too thick and would barely blend. Thanks for a great recipe!

I made this recipe and the proportions are perfect, the Vanilla makes the chocolate taste way more chocolatey. We don’t like chia seeds in ours so we just left them out and added chocolate chips instead and it was the perfect summer snack.
