Finding fun ways to eat more protein and fiber is one of my favorite jobs as a dietitian, and this recipe makes it easy. With about 45 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber per serving, these oats help keep you full and energized all morning. Plus, you can prep them the night before for a delicious breakfast that’s ready when you are!

Overnight Oats That Taste Like Dessert

These chocolate peanut butter overnight oats are proof that a nutritious breakfast doesn’t have to be boring. Here’s why you’ll love them:

  • Rich chocolate peanut butter flavor. Creamy, chocolatey, and perfectly sweet, just like your favorite peanut butter cup.
  • Packed with protein and fiber. Each serving has approximately 45 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber to help keep you full and support your gut health.
  • Perfect for busy mornings. Prep your oats the night before (or at the beginning of the week) and wake up to a satisfying breakfast that requires zero cooking.
  • Easy to customize. Use the milk, yogurt, and protein powder you already have at home, and finish with your favorite toppings.

If overnight oats aren’t your thing, make my peanut butter baked oatmeal or oatmeal banana pancakes instead.

Key Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for peanut butter overnight oats in small bowls.

Banana: A little mashed banana adds natural sweetness and makes the oats extra creamy. You won’t really taste the banana, and I wouldn’t skip it! It’s one of the reasons I love this recipe.

Large flake oats: Quick oats will work in a pinch but create a softer consistency. Explore more recipes with oats.

Chocolate protein powder: Use your favorite! I typically use Leanfit chocolate whey protein from Costco, but I also love anything from Legion Athletics.

Peanut powder and natural peanut butter: Using both gives these oats plenty of peanut butter flavor without needing a large amount of peanut butter. The peanut powder also adds some extra protein.

Milk and Greek yogurt: I like using higher-protein milk (like Fairlife) and 2% plain Greek yogurt for extra protein and creaminess, but you can use whatever you normally keep at home.

Topping Ideas

These oats are delicious on their own, but toppings make them even better! Here are some of my favorites:

  • Drizzle of peanut butter: My favorite! Use runny natural peanut butter so it’s easy to drizzle over your oats.
  • Chocolate chips: Add a sprinkle for little bites of chocolate in every spoonful.
  • Melted chocolate: For an extra indulgent peanut butter cup experience, drizzle a little melted chocolate over top right before eating.
  • Flaky sea salt: Just a pinch makes the chocolate and peanut butter flavors pop.
  • Chopped peanuts: Add a little crunch and extra peanut flavor.
  • Fresh berries: Try sliced strawberries or raspberries for a fresh, fruity contrast to the rich chocolate.
  • Sliced banana: delicious and nutritious.

Feel free to mix and match! I especially love the combination of peanut butter, chocolate chips, and a little flaky salt.

Miranda’s Tips

Tips From My Test Kitchen

Mash your banana really well. This helps distribute its sweetness throughout the oats and creates a smoother, creamier texture.

Mix thoroughly. Chocolate protein powder and cocoa powder can clump, so take an extra moment to stir everything together. Make sure to scrape the bottom and sides of your container.

Adjust the consistency. Your oats should be thick and creamy after chilling. If they’re thicker than you like, stir in a splash of milk before eating.

Save your toppings for the morning. Add extra peanut butter, chocolate chips, and flaky salt just before serving for the best texture.

If you love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter as much as I do, make my banana peanut butter oat bars, chocolate peanut butter protein smoothie, or chocolate peanut butter protein bars.

Storage and Meal Prep

These peanut butter cup overnight oats are perfect for prepping ahead. Store them in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

I recommend keeping the toppings separate until you’re ready to eat. When breakfast time rolls around, give your oats a quick stir, add your toppings, and enjoy straight from the fridge.

You can also prepare several individual jars at once for easy grab-and-go breakfasts all week long.

Common Questions

Can I make these overnight oats without protein powder?

You can, but the oats won’t have the same protein content, sweetness, or consistency. If you leave out the protein powder, you may need to reduce the milk slightly and add a little maple syrup or honey.

Can I make these without banana?

Yes, but I really prefer them with banana! It adds both sweetness and creaminess without tasting too strongly like banana.

Do I have to leave overnight oats in the fridge overnight?

Nope! They need at least 4 hours for the oats to soften and absorb the liquid. Overnight is convenient, but you can also prepare them in the morning to enjoy later that day.

Can I make these dairy-free?

Yes! Use your favorite dairy-free milk, yogurt, and protein powder. Just keep in mind that the protein content and consistency may change depending on the products you choose.
