This recipe is meant to be flexible, so you can easily switch up the ingredients based on what you like or already have at home. Here’s how to make it your own:
- Fruit: Fresh or frozen fruit both work. I use mixed berries for their vibrant color and fiber content, but you can customize with mango, banana, kiwi, apple, cherries, or any combination you like. Different fruits will change the flavor, color, and nutrition of your smoothie popsicles.
- Juice: I use orange juice because it’s citrusy, refreshing, and something most people already keep stocked. You can swap in any fruit juice you like, such as apple juice, white grape juice, or even a splash of lemonade for extra brightness.
- Yogurt: Plain Greek yogurt gives the popsicles a creamy texture and adds protein for a more balanced treat. You can use any yogurt you prefer like Balkan-style, Skyr, or regular, and any flavor like vanilla, berry, or peach. Higher fat yogurt will give a creamier texture to your popsicles.
- Sweetener: Honey adds a natural sweetness with great flavor, but you can also use maple syrup, agave, or another liquid sweetener. If your fruit is very sweet or you’re trying to limit added sugars in your diet, you can skip the sweetener altogether.

Other mix-ins
Feel free to add extra ingredients to your fruit smoothie popsicles to make them your own. Here are some fun ideas:
- Fresh lime juice: A splash of lime juice brightens the flavor and adds a little extra tartness. Add about 1–2 tablespoons to your smoothie mix before blending.
- Coconut milk: Swap some of your juice for coconut milk to add creaminess and a tropical flavor. Use full-fat for a richer texture, or light coconut milk to keep it lower calorie.
- Nut butter: A few tablespoons of peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter add healthy fats and a creamier texture. Blend into the smoothie before freezing, but don’t add too much or it might affect how the popsicles freeze.
- Seeds (hemp, flax, chia): These add fiber, healthy fats, and a little extra texture. Stir 1–2 tablespoons into your smoothie blend before freezing.
- Dates: Blend in 2-4 Medjool dates for natural sweetness, especially if your fruit isn’t very ripe. Make sure to remove the pits first and blend well for a smooth texture.
- Mild-tasting veggies (spinach, kale, zucchini): Add a handful of baby spinach, chopped kale, or zucchini for extra fiber and nutrients without changing the flavor much. Blend thoroughly for a smooth texture.
- Avocado: Add ¼ to ½ of a ripe avocado for a boost of healthy fats and an ultra-creamy texture.
Top tips
- Blend until completely smooth. Let your smoothie blend for a few extra seconds to make sure there are no chunks, especially if you’re using seedy fruits like berries.
- Use hot water to release popsicles. If your popsicles stick to the mold, run the outside under hot water for 10–20 seconds and gently wiggle them free.
- Choose higher-fat yogurt for extra creaminess. Non-fat yogurt works too, but whole milk or higher-fat yogurt will give you a smoother, richer popsicle.
- Leave a little room for expansion. Liquids expand as they freeze, so don’t fill your molds all the way to the top and leave a small gap to prevent spills.
Common questions
Everyone’s definition of “healthy” is different, but these fruit smoothie popsicles are definitely nutritionally balanced. What I love about this recipe as a dietitian is that it’s made with whole foods, it contains fiber and protein, and it has minimal added sugar. It’s the perfect nutritious summer treat.
I used a 10-cavity silicone popsicle mold from Amazon. Each popsicle holds about 3.2 fluid ounces, and this recipe is designed to fill this particular mold perfectly. Any silicone popsicle mold will work, but you may have a bit too much or too little smoothie to fill it perfectly.
Don’t worry, you can make homemade popsicles without molds! Instead, fill a muffin pan with silicone liners, fill with your smoothie, and add wooden popsicle sticks before freezing. You could also use washed and dried yogurt containers as a recycled alternative.
Yes! To make it dairy-free, use dairy-free yogurt or swap for coconut milk. You can technically swap the yogurt for more juice, but a liquid or non-dairy that contains fat makes a creamier popsicle. Regarding sugar, remember that fruit and juice contain naturally occurring sugar, so these popsicles can never be entirely sugar-free. However, you can eliminate added sugar by using 100% fruit juice and leaving out the honey or other sweeteners. Also make sure to use plain or sugar-free Greek yogurt.
