Guacamole is one of my favorite dips because it’s easy, creamy, and so incredibly satisfying.

But as a Registered Dietitian, I love it even more with an extra boost of protein. This guacamole with cottage cheese recipe has all the delicious flavors of traditional guac, but with some extra protein and calcium.

You’d be surprised at just how satisfying this cottage cheese guacamole can be. We don’t use too much cottage cheese (it tastes just like regular guacamole), and the texture is even creamier than usual.

Why you’ll love guacamole with cottage cheese

  • Made in one bowl
  • Ready in 5 minutes
  • Healthy dip for chips or veggies
  • Flavorful, creamy, and so satisfying
  • Easy to customize with extra mix-ins

What makes this cottage cheese guacamole healthy?

  • Fiber from avocado
  • Healthy fats for heart and brain health
  • Added protein for satiety and fitness goals
  • Calcium, B12, and more micronutrients from dairy
  • Extra protein without loads of extra calories

Ingredients in cottage cheese guacamole

You’ll only need a handful of ingredients to make this simple recipe:

Ingredients in cottage cheese guacamole on a warm toned marble counter

Avocado: Look for a large and ripe avocado. If your avocado isn’t ripe enough, it won’t mash well and doesn’t have great flavor. Look for an avocado that’s dark in color and slightly soft when pressed firmly.

Low fat cottage cheese: I prefer low fat cottage cheese in this recipe since there’s plenty of fats in the avocado already. I use 2% cottage cheese, but use what you prefer.

Red onion: Dice this as small as you can for the smoothest texture. Feel free to substitute for white onion or green onion.

Garlic: I love freshly minced garlic for the best flavor, but you can use jarred if needed. You could also swap for 1 teaspoon of garlic powder if you don’t have fresh.

Salt and pepper: I recommend starting with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and a few cracks of freshly ground black pepper. Taste everything once it’s mixed and adjust as needed.

What to serve with cottage cheese guacamole

Use guacamole with cottage cheese as a dip, spread, or topper — just like regular guac.

Dip: Serve with carrot slices, sliced radish, celery sticks, cucumber slices, sliced bell pepper, snap peas.

Spread: Spread onto sandwiches, toast, breakfast burritos, pinwheels, lunch wraps.

Topper: Add a scoop to salads, grain bowls, tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, crackers.

Want more protein?

Add more cottage cheese! I’ve tested this recipe with double the cottage cheese and it still tastes great.

  • Adjust salt and lime juice to taste. The size or your avocado and the brand of cottage cheese you’re using can change the flavor of your guacamole. Make sure to taste your guac before serving, and adjust salt and lime juice as needed.

Common questions

Can I make this recipe in advance?

While you can make guacamole with cottage cheese in advance, it might brown as it sits. Fresh is best — but it can last a few hours or days in the fridge if needed.

How do I prevent my cottage cheese guacamole from browning?

Guacamole browns when it’s exposed to oxygen. It’s impossible to avoid browning completely, but reducing air exposure can slow it down. Keep it stored in an airtight food container in the fridge, or top with a film of plastic wrap, to minimize browning.

Can I add more protein?

You can add more protein to this recipe by doubling the cottage cheese. I’ve tested it, and it tastes great!

Can I make a larger portion?

Yes, feel free to double or triple this recipe to make more guacamole with cottage cheese.
