Craving McDonald’s but working on your health? Try this simple copycat recipe for their popular big mac sauce — made lighter, lower calorie, and a little higher in protein.

As a dietitian, I love that sauces can make homemade meals more satisfying and satiating. But I don’t love when they’re super calorie-dense and loaded with unhealthy fats. That’s why this healthy big mac sauce recipe is so great. It’s got the same delicious flavors, with less of the not-so-great stuff.

Why you’ll love this dietitian-made recipe

  1. Lower in fat. Instead of using a giant cup of full-fat mayonnaise, this recipe mixes mayo with plain Greek yogurt. You’ll get all the same creamy satisfaction with half the calories.
  2. Higher in protein. The addition of Greek yogurt adds a nutrient-dense boost of protein to help you feel full and support a calorie-balanced diet.
  3. Gluten-free and low sugar: This recipe is naturally gluten-free and a great low sugar option.
  4. So delicious. This healthy big mac sauce adds the perfect flavor to homemade burgers, tacos, and bowls. Adding sauce = making healthy food taste better = you’ll eat more healthy food. Win, win!

Ingredients in healthy big mac sauce

Mayonnaise: Feel free to use full-fat mayonnaise or light mayonnaise, for fewer calories and less fat. You could also omit the mayonnaise and use only Greek yogurt, but I prefer the flavor when they’re mixed.

Non-fat plain Greek yogurt: You could also use 2%, just make sure it’s plain.

Yellow mustard: You could swap for other mustards if desired, but yellow mustard gives the most true taste to the McDonald’s version.

Ketchup: Just plain Ketchup.

Sweet pickle relish: Or, you can finely dice your own sweet pickles.

Table salt: Make sure your salt has a fine texture so it mixes well in the homemade burger sauce.

Onion powder: Onion powder adds flavor to the recipe, so don’t skip it.

Garlic powder: Also for flavor. Don’t skip it!
